JOB 2:10 "... SHALL WE ACCEPT THE GOOD FROM GOD AND NOT THE BAD?"
ONE family TRYING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN ANY WAY POSSIBLE.
Part 2...
There comes the time when a child matures enough to understand the rules set by the parents and why they were put in place. We understand these rules and boundaries were set for our protection and overall good. With this new knowledge there is often the feeling of guilt from past mistakes and conflicts with parents. I find this much the same with our relationship with God. See before we become a follower of Christ we repeatedly spit in the face of God. We fight against God and do not understand the limits He has set on us. We push directly against God, and other times we want to get as close as we can to the boundary God has set for us. We spend most of our lives living in direct opposition to God. As a result after we choose to make ourselves slaves to God there are often the feelings of guilt and remorse, which is necessary to accept Christ, but this is not meant to stay with us. And this is where God sends a new relationship into your life… Understanding God’s forgiving, unfailing love can be one of the hardest things for followers to grasp, but God gives us relationships to help. It all started with Adam. God saw the need to give him someone to walk through life with. God saw that Adam needed a partner to grow closer to God, and He created Eve. God gave Adam a partner who would continue to love him and stay beside him for the rest of his life. Even when he did something stupid, we can admit all men will do something incredibly stupid and repeat it more than one time, she stayed with right there with him. A never failing, consistent, choice to love him. See the beautiful institution of marriage that God set up with Adam and Eve. There are no rules set up by one for the other not to cross, it’s a partnership. Don’t take me wrong, this is not saying we are no longer tied to God’s boundaries. He is trying to show what unconditional and never ending love looks like; to put this love in flesh. Marriage is not for us to only be happy, but everything is to bring us closer to God. And experiencing a person who will actually love you through everything is a true blessing, one that can only be given… by God.

Part 1...
The God of the Old Testament seems so strict when compared to Jesus and the New Testament. Why? If God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow how can His personality change so much? This is a question I hear from time to time from students, and I have even wondered it myself. I am not claiming to have all the answers and by no means have I figured everything out, but I have a little light to share on the subject. I believe all the things God gives us in life are here to point us to Him or to help us learn and understand more of God. From the beginning of our life God gives us parents, two people, deeply invested in us. I realize this may not be the case with some parents, but this how God intended the family unit to work. Parents love their children and with this love comes the dreaded rules put in place on their children. It’s much the same with God. In the Old Testament He was parenting, for the most part, the new child/nation of Israel. God wanted His people to Love Him with all their heart, but it just was not sinking in. Think of running a day care for 3-4 year olds and telling them to, “Love me, and do things based on your love for me.” The idea would not work because the children would not really understand what that meant. When a four year old wants a toy to play with the first thought is not, “How would my teacher acquire the toy.” No, a four year old goes takes the toy and begins playing. The same is true of people, we need to have rules laid out for us to know what God wants from us. So, God started off with the Ten Commandments, which He later explained even further to help the idea drive home. God was slowly helping His children grow and mature in their knowledge of Him… Eventually people grow up and God sees it’s time to give a new relationship to learn from… Part 2 coming soon… Have you ever read the famous story from Exodus where Moses is talking to God in the burning bush? I’m sure most of you have read it or at least heard it. Something about that story has always struck me as odd. The part where Moses asks the bush, “What is your name, so I can tell the Israelites who sent me?” (Ex. 3:13) For the longest time I wondered why God responded the way He did. God replied, “I AM WHO I AM… Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” (Ex. 3:14) I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that God could have given Moses a little more to work with. Seriously that almost comes across as sarcastic and rude, but as I grew up thinking this I always knew there was a reason God answered like this. So let’s take a look…
Remember where the Israelites have been for 400 years. In Egypt where there is a god for everything thing under, above, around the sun. So Moses, looking ahead, asked for God to tell him which god he was speaking with. Perhaps Moses was considering the questions to come once he arrived in Egypt claiming he was sent by God to lead the slaves out of bondage. And he needed this God to give him a strong name to work under, maybe the sun god or god of the Nile, either of those would have worked great. But something else came from the burning bush… “I AM.” That was all, or was it? You see Moses asked an honest question, but it was one that no person would be able to comprehend the answer to. Moses was looking for a single name that would sum up God, but there is no name to explain who God is. So God gave him an even better answer than a name. God said, “I AM…” you fill in the blank. Whatever you are looking for God has it covered. He’s not limited to controlling the sun, or some river. His power and authority goes beyond any idea like love or something as big as death, God has it covered. What I took as God being short or rude with Moses I now take as amazing, because although we try to put limits and boundaries on God, He never does this to Himself. In one answer God says He is Everything and Anything we need, so what keeps us from trusting Him? What do you need God to be? He's waiting, all you have to do is ask... |
