WEDNESDAY'S WORD: Psalm 50:15

"Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me." Psalm 50:15

Picture
Verses like this one can bring great comfort to someone going through an intense season of testing. The reality of abusing this promise, however, must be considered. Like the great truth of Romans 8:28, this message of hope in Psalm 50, as are so many other promises in scripture, limited to those who are in vital union with the God of the Bible. The verses following this plea to call upon Him is a disturbing and solemn charge to the wicked. God plainly says that He will rebuke them, not deliver them. In fact, reading the latter half of Proverbs 1 reveals how God will laugh at the calamity of the wicked. He says that He will not answer them when they call, and they will not find Him though they seek Him diligently. Why? "Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord, they would have none of my counsel and despised my every rebuke. Therefore, they shall eat the fruit of their own way, and be filled to the full with their own fancies." (Proverbs 1:29-31)

I believe the key to understanding this great promise in Psalm 50:15 is found in the last phrase: "And you shall glorify Me." For the sincere believer, that sums up his or her heart's desire. The Bible says in I Corinthians 10:31: "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." Those of us who have experienced His grace in Christ, should be living to glorify, honor, and exalt Him in everything that we do. Sure, we will all make poor choices and decisions from time to time, but He will break our hearts in divine discipline, bringing us back into a proper fellowship with Himself. This work of personal and spiritual renewal will adjust our inner desires to once again seek to glorify Him. This is not true for the unbeliever, however, as the Bible says they do not "glorify Him... they became fools... and God gave them over to a reprobate mind." (Romans 1:18-32)

Beloved, living and trusting in the precious promises of God's word requires a relationship with Him. Spiritual maturity demands that we stop handing out empty promises to a lost and dying world that despises our God and hates His Son. Yes, it's wonderful to know that in the day of trouble, those of us washed pure and clean by the blood of Christ can call upon His name for grace, strength, and deliverance. Hallelujah! But for those who have not been redeemed, God only desires to hear from them: "God be merciful to me a sinner. Forgive me of my horrible sin. Save my by your grace as I trust Jesus. Please make me forever alive in Him. Amen." If you realize today that you're lost and undone, you are in eternal TROUBLE, and God can deliver you right now, and you will then be able to glorify Him. Praise the Lord!

WEDNESDAY'S WORD: John 1:22-23

"Then they said to him, 'Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?' He said: 'I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord."
John 1:22-23

John the Baptist had a unique and critical calling upon his life. As the forerunner of Christ, he began to thunder forth the message of biblical repentance after nearly 400 hundred years of heavenly silence. Multitudes left their bustling cities, quiet towns, and rural homes to travel to the wilderness area around the Jordan River to hear this powerful prophet. With such a diverse audience seeking to hear him, John may have been tempted to change both the style and substance of his messages to fit the expectations of his listeners, but he never compromised the truth that God had given to him. In fact, his preaching finally led to his imprisonment and untimely death.

Some could easily criticize this man of God for having such a brief ministry, or for his refusal to approach King Herod in a softer, user-friendly, and seeker-sensitive kind of way. Yet Jesus said about this man: "For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist." John fulfilled the ministry that God had called him to and equipped him for. The nation had responded to his preaching, he baptized the Lord Jesus, and he began to point others to Him as the ultimate fountain of grace as he said, "Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world!" In the sunset of his God ordained ministry, John said, "He must increase, but I must decrease."
There might be seasons of life that you and I encounter when we feel as if we are all alone on the pathway of faith. Two thoughts should occupy our minds and hearts during these kinds of experiences: One, Jesus said that He would never leave us nor forsake us, so we are not alone. Praise the Lord! And two, if it does appear that you are the only one in your workplace, family, neighborhood, school, etc. that sincerely loves Jesus and desires to live for His glory, then by the power of the Holy Spirit living in you as a Christ follower, be faithful to the One who has graciously and eternally saved you!
I often think of a popular song written by Squire Parsons, released way back on January 1, 1995, that reminds me of the faithfulness of John the Baptist when his voice was the only one declaring the way of the Lord. Listen, worship, and remain faithful to proclaim the gospel of Christ with your voice.

WEDNESDAY'S WORD: Judge Kavanaugh

With recent current events surrounding the pending confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court, and his stated abuse of alcohol while in his teenage and college years, I decided to post a testimony that has been on my heart for quite a while. May the power of the risen Christ lift up those who struggle with any kind of ongoing addiction.
